Valletta, 3 July 2012 – Nine Maltese NGOs have expressed their condemnation of the use of violence by state officials following the tragic death of Malian migrant, Mamadou Kamara, while in the custody of the Detention Service on 30 June.

Malta: irregular immigrants 'should be in open centres' On 25 November, in an interview with Herman Grech of The Times in Malta, Ms Melanie Teff, JRS International Advocacy Coordinator, called on Commonwealth governments to reconsider their policies of putting irregular immigrants in closed centres while their asylum cases are being processed. She pointed that the use of open centres is a more sensible, rational and ultimately cheaper alternative than detention.
