 Turkey
JRS Turkey started its operations in October 2009 as a follow up to the Meryam Ana Parish Refugee activities, and as part of the Ankara Refugee Support Group Programme. In August 2011, JRS, in agreement with KADER (Chaldean Assyrian International Humanitarian Aid Association), has been able to extend its services across Turkey to reach refugees in the most vulnerable circumstances. In October 2011, an office was established in Kirikkale, 60km outside of Ankara where 250 refugee families are based.

After an assessment visit carried out by the JRS International Director and the Programmes and Financial Coordinator for Middle East in November 2009, it was decided that JRS could provide services in the form of emergency assistance.

JRS provides food vouchers to 25 families and 10 individuals per month. On a weekly basis people may receive in-kind donations, and other necessities such as diapers and foodstuffs.

Through a network of partners JRS is also able to offer legal assistance to asylum seekers. Psychosocial support is offered to traumatised and vulnerable persons. The most popular of JRS services are the English and Turkish classes which are offered both in Ankara and Kirikkale. These language classes help refugees integrate in Turkish society, and into their country of resettlement.

Turkey hosts 27,000 refugees and asylum seekers, mainly from Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Sudan and Somalia. The predominately urban refugees are scattered throughout 50 Turkish cities. JRS reaches up to 360 families per year in Ankara. By the end of 2012, JRS aims to operate in more locations outside of the city where there is a great need for emergency assistance and support. Owing to their dispersal across the countries cities, it is difficult to identify and reach those refugees and asylum seekers in the most vulnerable circumstances.
