JRS West Africa is one of 10 geographic regions of the Jesuit Refugee Service, an international Catholic organisation sponsored by the Society of Jesus.  The regional office in West Africa serves refugee and internally displaced people in Central African Republic (CAR), Chad and Côte d’Ivoire.  Services include:  education, skills training, vocational training and healthcare.  JRS supports the redevelopment of war-torn communities in these areas, including the reconstruction of schools and the reintegration of former child soliders.

Central African Republic: projects suspended and staff evacuated

Yaoundé, 27 March 2013 – JRS staff were forced to evacuate the Central African Republic (CAR) and suspend projects for the second time in three months due to worsening conflict between government forces and the Séleka rebel coalition.

Rome, 18 August 2010 – The Central African Republic (CAR) has asked the UN Security Council not to withdraw UN peacekeeping forces from the country when the mandate for Chad and CAR expires on 31 December next.

Central African Republic (CAR): refugees transferred to camp in Chad

N'djamena, 7 May 2010 – The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has begun transporting approximately 1,100 refugees to Moula camp in southern Chad from northern CAR. The refugees fled the latest wave of violence to sweep Ouham province where government troops have been fighting rebels.

Central African Republic: peace talks underway

"Not a day goes past without the sons and daughters of CAR being beaten, humiliated, tortured, imprisoned and assassinated. We're all responsible. Let's make sure it never happens again," said former President Ange Félix Patassé at inclusive peace talks which began on 8 December.
