Côte d'Ivoire: rising violence fuels massive rise in displacement
Abidjan, 25 March 2011 – Increasing violence in Abidjan led to a steep rise in forced displacement. Estimates put the number of internally displaced persons in the coastal city between 700,000 and one million people.

The demonstrations targeted French and United Nations operations in the government-controlled south of the country. However the protests escalated into violent encounters which resulted in five Ivoirian deaths and major destruction of property. JRS finds violence targeted at international humanitarian organisations unacceptable and urges all involved in the recent incidents in Côte d’Ivoire to prohibit similar behaviour in the future.
