The Nairobi JRS Income Generating Project
The project aims to provide necessary assistance in terms of finance, materials, skills, working tools and
equipment to refugees to allow them to start small income generating projects with the expectation that
after six months most of them will be able to provide for their basic needs. This project has been a very
important helping hand for the refugees in Nairobi, the majority of whom live in the slum areas of the city.
Mikono Craft Shop
The Mikono Craft shop was established in 1993 as a project within the IGP. It aims at empowering the refugees
financially by providing a market outlet for the handicrafts that they produce. The shop buys crafts from
refugees living in Nairobi and the refugee camps in Kenya. Mikono" is the Swahili word for hands. As
a business entity, the shop buys the crafts and sells them to both domestic and export markets, providing
an outlet for approximately 70 refugees families, 75% of them being women. The profit made from the sale
of the crafts is used for stock purchase and to cover some operating costs of the shop. | |
